WE WANT "PESA MASHULENI"- KNUT

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called upon the government and national leaders to invest more in the education sector.
Speaking at Ronald Gideon Ngala Primary in Mombasa while celebrating the 20th Teachers day the union’s chairman Mudzo Nzili urged the leaders to stop chasing selfish political gains which do not benefit the local mwananchi.
He said the referendum push was ill timed and inappropriate. Adding that the union will only support the “pesa mashinani campaign if only there will be “pesa mashuleni” as the education sector lacks adequate infrastructure.
Through a universal message read by the union’s chairman, the secretary general Wilson Sossion said that investing in the education sector is investment in knowledge and true wisdom which results into formation and transformation of individuals for the benefit of a holistic society sensitive to nature, environment and beneficial industrialization.

FISHERMEN TO WAIT THREE YEARS FOR NEW DEPOTS

Fishermen in Kilifi county will have to wait for three years for new depots to be operational. The Agriculture,Livestock and Fisheries executive has said.
The depots are set to benefit about 10,000 fishermen in the county. They will be constructed in Mtwapa, Uyombo, Marereni and Watamu.
According to Mwalimu katana Menza the sh40 million depots will eliminate exploitation by middle men tthat offer low prices to fishermen because they lack preservation equipment and will be ready after three years.
The County harvests about two million tonnes of fish a year.

VARSITY TO HOST PUBLIC PARLIAMENTARY LECTURE


In a bid to promote good governance and democracy, a public university will be hosting the second edition of public parliamentary lecture in the country.
The lecture which will be tackling “Devolution and the role the Parliament has played” is scheduled to take place on 28th November 2014 from 10:00 A.M at Masinde Muliro University grounds.
The Public lecture is a community outreach event organized by the Parliament and is expected to provide an open platform for the public community to interact with the elected leaders without the official formalities.
The  panel of discussants  will comprise Bungoma County Senator Hon. Moses Wetangula, Kakamega County Senator Hon Bonny Khalwale, Hon. Mutaha Kangu, Speakers Kakamega County Hon. Morris Buluma, , Ekwe Eturo of Senate and Justin Muturi of the National Assembly.
According to the Parliamentary Service Commission led by Prof. Nyokabi Kamau, the Director Centre for Parliamentary Studies, the event will be an ideal opportunity to involve people in a deliberate way.
“ We expect this event to attract a lot of people particularly students, members of the academia, members of the public, members of the Count Assembly and anyone else who would like to engage on a discussion about devolution,” said Prof. Nyokabi Kamau.
A member of Management Dr. Judah Ndiku thanked the Parliament for considering partnering with the University.
He reiterated the important role Parliament plays in implementation of the new Constitution. He said this will be an opening not only for parliament but also for the University to interact with the community.
The Public lecture will be covered live on National Television and will end with an exciting match at Bukhungu stadium.
The match will involve the National Parliament team against a combined team of Members of the Kakamega, Busia, Bungoma and Vihiga county assemblies.

GOVERMENT LAUNCHES A 5 YEAR INITIATIVE TO ELIMINATE TRACHOMA

The government will launch a five year initiative to eliminate Blinding Trachoma in the Country by 2019.
The initiative include a large scale program of Surgery, Antibiotic distribution, Facial cleanliness and Environmental ( SAFE) improvement initiatives.

According to a press release from the ministry of health, the program will cater for 41,000 people with advanced stages of blinding Trachoma in 12 counties by 2019.
The initiative also includes distribution of antibiotics to 3 million people to treat the active infection and improve community health messages in effective hygiene and sanitation practices.
As part of facial cleanliness element of the SAFE strategy which has been tried and tested and endorsed by the World Health Organization, Unilever will support a new face- wading pilot project to help reduce trachoma transmission.
There are About 16 million people living in Trachoma endemic areas in Kenya. The disease slowly and painfully robs people of their sight ad repeated infections turns eye lashes inwards scraping the cornea and eventually causing irreversible blindness.
The five year initiative is supported by Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust established in 2012 and will also be working on similar program in Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria and Uganda.

MISS TOURISM KWALE CHAMPIONS SANITARY TOWEL DONATION


Kwale County’s miss tourism, Fatuma khamis is championing a sanitary towel donation campaign in the County.
The project dubbed sanitary towels to improve girls education in kwale  is aimed at ensuring that the girl child does not miss classroom hours due to lack of sanitary towel.
Speaking to nipashenipashike Fatuma said:  apart from providing the towels, the campaign aims at informing them on how they can keep hygienic lifestyles to prevent infections, empowering mothers to support their girls thereby reducing the risk of girls engaging in risky behaviors and providing role models for the girls to look up to as they continue with their quest for education
According to Fatuma the campaign will be launched next month and will be rolled out in all primary schools in each sub county.
She urged well wishers to make their donations at drop boxes available at Nakumat Diani and Sammat. Those wishing to make personal contributions will have to contact her through her mail, fatmakhamisi46@yahoo.com
Fatuma who made headlines last week when she accused the county government of abandoning her after her crowning is working in partnership with the County’s first lady in the campaign.
