MOMBASA COUNTY CRACKSDOWN ON RECKLESS GARBAGE DUMPERS

41people have been arrested for dumping garbage and throwing litter in the city. The accused found themselves on the wrong side of the law, following a crackdown that has dominated the city over the past few days.
According to the Mombasa county environment executive Fatma Awale, those arrested were found recklessly dumping garbage on the street and residential areas.
Children at Mombasa's main garbage dumpsite, Mwakirunge. Residents have been complaining about the dump site posing enviromental danger to school going children and the community.

This comes barely a month after the business community in Mombasa raised concern over filth in the town saying it was driving away investors. The business community also critised the county government for doing little in ensuring the city is clean.
“Nobody is happy, nobody can be happy about such a filthy city. Something has to be done,” said Mombasa Chamber of Commerce chairman James Mureu.
It is this move that saw the county government pass by laws that impose harsher penalties. Some of the accused will be charged over the offence today.
Those found guilty, face fines of up to Sh100, 000 or jail terms of three years, as a deterrent to those inclined to unhygienic disposal of garbage.
